Regulatory framework

Military Aviation Authority (MAA): The MAA is the UK government organisation responsible for regulating all military aviation in the UK. These standards are broadly aligned with civil aerodrome requirements and ICAO Annex 14, but are applied through the MAA’s own regulatory framework rather than through CAA CAP 168 directly.

Defence Aerodrome Manual (DAM): Each MOD aerodrome publishes a bespoke Defence Aerodrome Manual, which provides the detailed operational requirements for that station including visual aids and wind direction indicators. The DAM is based on the MAA’s template but is adapted to the specific characteristics of the aerodrome, its aircraft types and operational profile.

ICAO Annex 14 alignment: As confirmed in MOD and MAA documentation, government aerodrome design and maintenance standards are broadly similar to those of civil licensed aerodromes. The physical specification for wind direction indicators, including minimum sock dimensions, colour standards and illumination requirements for night operations, follows the same ICAO Annex 14 baseline that underpins CAA CAP 168. Where waivers or exemptions apply, these are documented by the Aerodrome Operator in the DAM.

JSP 360: JSP 360 governs the use of military aerodromes by civil aircraft. Where civil operators use MOD aerodromes, the standards applicable to visual aids will be communicated to the operator as part of the terms and conditions of use.

What military aerodromes require

The wind direction indicator requirements for a military aerodrome follow from ICAO Annex 14 as applied through MAA publications and the station DAM. In practice:

Frangible masts are the standard for airside windsock poles at military aerodromes: they are designed to disintegrate on aircraft contact rather than causing structural damage to the aircraft. These are specified in red and white stripes to distinguish them as aerodrome obstacles

Illumination is required for night operations, with the specification aligned to ICAO Annex 14 requirements

Helipad windsocks on MOD helidecks follow the CAP 437 framework for offshore installations or ICAO Annex 14 Volume II for onshore helicopter operations, depending on the nature of the site
