Siting: What Most Sites Get Wrong

A windsock gives accurate information only when it is flying in free air, away from obstructions that disrupt airflow. On a chemical processing site, this means:

  • Above the roofline of surrounding buildings and structures
  • Clear of tank farms, bunded areas and pipework that channel or block wind
  • Not directly behind a dominant wind obstacle in the prevailing direction
  • Visible from all primary muster points without the need for binoculars

If the safety report requires the windsock to be visible from specific locations, verify this is achievable before the mast is installed. Changing the siting after the fact costs more in time and disruption than getting it right first time.
