Airfield Windsock Maintenance: Best Practice Guide
Airfield windsock maintenance comes down to four habits: a daily visual check as part of the airfield inspection, a quarterly hands-on inspection of fabric and swivel, cleaning as needed, and planned annual replacement of the sock itself.

Why windsock maintenance matters more on airfields
On an industrial site, a degraded windsock is a risk. On an airfield it’s an operational hazard and a licensing issue: wind direction indicators form part of the visual aids that aerodrome licensing under CAA CAP 168 expects to be maintained and clearly visible, and pilots make landing decisions on what your sock tells them.
A sock that under-reads by five knots because the fabric is waterlogged is actively misleading everyone in the circuit.
The maintenance schedule
Daily: visual check (30 seconds)
Fold it into the existing daily airfield inspection: is the sock flying freely, tracking wind shifts, undamaged at a glance, and (for night operations) is the illumination working? Log it; a one-line entry builds the audit trail that inspections love to see.
Weekly: closer look (2 minutes)
From the base of the mast: check for fraying at the tail, visible fading, tears, and that the swivel is turning smoothly rather than sticking and jerking. Binoculars beat lowering the mast for a weekly check.
Quarterly: hands-on inspection (15 minutes)
Lower the mast (hinged-baseplate masts make this a one-person job) and inspect:

Fabric. Check inside and out for holes, seam wear, coating breakdown (stiff, cracked or peeling inner surface) and fading against a reference swatch.

Mouth and harness. Eyelets secure, harness ties or clips sound, ring undamaged and round.

Swivel arm. Spins freely through 360° with no play or grinding; clean and lubricate per the manufacturer’s spec.

Mast and fixings. Baseplate bolts tight, no corrosion at the base, halyard (if fitted) running free.

Illumination. Lamp function, lens condition, cable integrity.
Annually: planned replacement
Replace the sock on a schedule rather than on failure. Twelve months is the right default for UK airfield exposure; coastal strips should halve that. Fit the new sock, wash and store the old one as an emergency spare if it’s still serviceable, and put the swap in the maintenance log.
Cleaning without wrecking the fabric
Rinse with fresh water and, if needed, mild soap, never solvents, bleach or pressure washers, all of which strip the polyurethane coating that keeps the fabric waterproof and responsive. Dry fully before storage; a sock stored damp comes out of the cupboard mildewed and weakened.
Keep a spare sock on site
The strongest single recommendation we make to airfield operators: hold one spare sock per mast. Fabric failure is sudden (a gust finds a worn seam) and a spare turns an unserviceable wind indicator into a ten-minute swap rather than a NOTAM-worthy gap. When maintenance isn’t enough
If quarterly inspections keep finding the same problems (rapid fading, repeated fraying, chronic waterlogging), the sock isn’t failing, the specification is. Exposed and coastal airfields need heavier fabric and marine-grade fittings, not more frequent patching.
