How military requirements relate to ICAO Annex 14

Frangible masts: the critical airside requirement
The most important physical difference between a military aerodrome windsock installation and a generic industrial one is the frangible mast requirement for any windsock sited airside ; in the vicinity of runways, taxiways and aprons.
ICAO Annex 14 Volume I Chapter 9 specifies in detail the equipment and installations of operational significance on the airfield which should be frangible, including any visual or non-visual aid located near runways, taxiways and aprons. This requirement applies directly to windsock masts on military aerodromes through the MAA’s alignment with ICAO Annex 14.
Frangible objects are to be of low mass and designed to break, distort or yield on impact, presenting a minimum hazard to an aircraft. The practical meaning for windsock masts: a non-frangible steel or aluminium pole sited airside on a military aerodrome is non-compliant, regardless of how correctly the windsock itself is specified. The mast must be capable of failing safely on aircraft contact.
Frangible mast specification:
All windsock masts for airfield use are manufactured in a way that incorporates a unique break system within the main mast. Standard frangible windsock masts are constructed from fibreglass with a gel coat finish, and are coloured in red and white ICAO obstacle marking bands for visual identification to aircrew. The break system within the mast allows it to collapse on aircraft contact rather than transmitting the full load to the aircraft structure.
The windsock attaches to the mast by means of a rigid stainless-steel mounting frame that can freely rotate around the mast, giving a clear indication of wind direction particularly in lighter wind conditions.
The frangible mast specification is separate from the windsock sock itself. Fixed wing versus rotary wing aerodromes
The MAA regulates both fixed wing and rotary wing military aerodromes, and the windsock requirements differ between them.
Fixed wing military aerodromes require wind direction indicators to ICAO Annex 14 Volume I standards. The 12ft minimum sock is the standard specification, with frangible masts for airside installations, illumination for night operations, and siting to provide clear visibility from the runway threshold. This mirrors the civil licensed aerodrome requirement under CAP 168 but is referenced to the MAA framework.
Rotary wing military aerodromes and helipads are covered by ICAO Annex 14 Volume II, which specifically addresses helicopter operations. The sock size requirement differs from fixed wing: for helicopter operations the approach path geometry means a 4ft to 8ft sock is often the correct specification rather than the full 12ft aerodrome standard. The sock must be clearly readable from the approach path at helicopter operating heights and speeds, which on a dedicated rotary wing site may differ from the requirements on a mixed or fixed wing aerodrome.
For stations operating both fixed wing and rotary wing aircraft, wind direction indicators may need to serve both sets of requirements. The station aerodrome officer should confirm the applicable reference for each installation with the MAA or DIO as appropriate.
Defence Infrastructure Organisation and procurement
Most windsock procurement and maintenance at UK military stations passes through or is overseen by the Defence Infrastructure Organisation. Specification for UK military aerodrome windsocks
Standard military aerodrome specification (fixed wing)
Sock: 12ft length, 36-inch mouth, 18-inch tail. International orange (dayglow) PU-reinforced polyester. This is the ICAO Annex 14 minimum for the aerodrome standard.
Hardware: stainless steel mouth ring and harness throughout. Brass eyelets on the reinforced mouth section.

Illumination: required for any station conducting night flying operations or holding a night rating. External floodlighting from above is the standard arrangement, positioned to illuminate the sock without causing glare toward approach paths.
Striping: orange and white striped socks are the standard for aviation installations where wind speed cueing is operationally useful alongside direction. Plain international orange is acceptable but striped provides additional information to aircrew and is common at military aerodromes.
Fabric grades

Military aerodromes often have multiple runways and complex taxiway systems. A spare 12ft sock should be held in station stores at all times.
