Choosing the Correct Windsock Size
For licensed aerodromes, choose a 12ft (3.6m) windsock to align with ICAO guidance. For helipads, private airstrips and most industrial sites, a 4ft–8ft windsock on a 3–5m pole is the practical standard. For events, farms and golf courses, 3ft–4ft is usually enough. The right size is the one that’s clearly visible from wherever decisions get made: a cockpit, a crane cab, or a site muster point.
Windsock sizes explained
Windsocks are specified by three measurements: length, mouth diameter (the open end that faces the wind) and tail diameter (the fly end). Our Safeguard range, for example, runs from 3ft long with a 15″ mouth and 8″ tail up to 12ft with a 36″ mouth and 18″ tail.
The taper between mouth and tail is what makes the sock inflate progressively, lifting at around 3 knots and flying fully extended at 15 knots, so a bigger sock isn’t “more sensitive”, it’s more visible.

Aviation: what the regulations expect
ICAO Annex 14 describes the aerodrome wind direction indicator as a truncated fabric cone at least 3.6m long with a mouth of at least 0.9m (which is why 12ft is the aerodrome standard worldwide), visible from aircraft at altitude and illuminated where the aerodrome operates at night. In the UK, wind direction indicator requirements for licensed aerodromes sit within CAA CAP 168, and offshore helideck windsocks (including illumination) are covered by CAP 437. Smaller strips and helipads without licensing obligations have flexibility, but bigger remains better wherever aircraft are involved: an 8ft sock can be read from circuit height in a way a 4ft sock simply can’t.
Industrial sites: visibility beats specification
Most industrial windsocks aren’t governed by a size regulation; the requirement (often arising from COMAH emergency planning or site risk assessment) is that wind direction is clearly visible where it matters.
Work backwards from the viewing distance: a 4ft sock reads clearly at a few hundred metres; a 6ft–8ft sock suits large sites where staff assess wind direction from across the facility. Mount it high enough to catch clean air (as a rule of thumb, above nearby obstructions, typically 3–5m minimum) or it will report swirl rather than true wind.
Don’t forget the pole and swivel
Sock size determines hardware: mouth diameter must match the swivel arm and ring, and larger socks need longer swivel arms so the tail can’t wrap the pole.
