What are the Designated Flag Flying Days in the UK?

The UK government publishes a fixed list of designated days each year when the Union Flag must be flown on government buildings, and most councils adopt the same list as a minimum for their own civic buildings.

It includes the national patron saint days (St David’s Day, St Patrick’s Day, St George’s Day, St Andrew’s Day), the Sovereign’s official birthday and Accession Day, Commonwealth Day, and Remembrance Sunday, among others.

Many councils choose to fly the flag beyond this minimum list, including all year round, or add the county or district flag alongside the Union Flag on a second pole.

Flagpoles for War Memorials and Remembrance

War memorial flagpoles are held to a different standard than a standard civic pole: they’re expected to be dignified, low-maintenance, and correctly specified for the frequent half-mast use that comes with Remembrance Sunday and other commemorative dates.

  • Repainting or refinishing aluminium poles as needed (rarely required within the first several years)
  • Prompt repair of any halyard wear, particularly on poles used for frequent flag changes
