What wears a windsock out?
UV radiation breaks down both the dye and the fibres. It’s the reason a sock fades before it fails structurally, and why south-facing, unshaded installations age fastest, even in the UK.
Mechanical flexing. A windsock in a 20-knot wind is flexing thousands of times an hour. Every flex works the fibres and stitching, concentrated at the tail and mouth.
Salt and contaminants. Salt crystals are abrasive and hygroscopic: they grind fibres and keep the fabric damp, accelerating coating breakdown. Industrial fallout (dust, chemical residues) does similar damage inland.
Water absorption. Once the polyurethane coating degrades, the fabric absorbs water, flies heavy, and under-reads the wind. This is usually the functional end of a windsock’s life even if it isn’t torn.
Hardware failure. A seized swivel or worn harness loads the fabric unevenly and can halve its remaining life.
How to make a windsock last longer
