5 Signs Your Windsock Needs Replacing
A windsock needs replacing when it shows visible fading, fraying at the tail, tears or holes, sags in winds that should lift it, or has corroded fittings. Any one of these compromises the accuracy and visibility that make a windsock useful, and on regulated sites a degraded windsock can be a compliance failure, not just a cosmetic one. Here’s how to spot each sign and what to do about it.
1. The colour has faded
A windsock works because it can be seen. International orange (dayglow) is the standard precisely because it stands out against sky, cloud and industrial backdrops. UV exposure gradually bleaches the fabric, and a sock that has drifted from vivid orange to washed-out peach no longer delivers the at-a-glance visibility that pilots, crane operators and site staff rely on.
The test: hold a corner of a new sock (or a fabric swatch) against the flying one. If the difference is obvious from ten paces, replace it. On licensed aerodromes, wind direction indicators are expected to remain clearly visible from altitude, so a faded sock invites a finding at your next inspection.
2. The tail end is fraying
The fly end (tail) takes the most punishment. It whips constantly in wind, and once the anti-fray stitching goes, fraying accelerates quickly: a small amount of wear can become a shredded tail within weeks in exposed locations. A shortened, ragged tail also changes how the sock flies, making wind-speed estimation less reliable.
The test: loose threads or visible fabric loss at the tail hem. Light bobbling is normal ageing; hanging threads and torn panels are replacement triggers.
3. Tears, holes or failed seams
Holes anywhere in the cone disrupt airflow through the sock, so it flies inaccurately, under-reading wind speed or twitching unpredictably. Common failure points are the seams and the mouth, where the fabric meets the ring and harness under constant load.
The test: inspect with the sock lowered, in good light, inside and out. Any hole larger than a fingertip, or any stitching you can pull apart by hand, means the sock is done.
4. It sags in winds that should lift it
A healthy windsock starts to lift at around 3 knots and flies fully extended at 15 knots. If yours hangs limp in a stiff breeze, the fabric has likely absorbed water (the waterproof coating has broken down), stretched, or become heavy with contamination. A sock that under-reports wind speed is arguably worse than no sock at all, because people trust what it tells them.
The test: on a day with a steady moderate breeze, compare the sock’s angle with a forecast or handheld anemometer reading. Consistent under-reading = replace.
5. The fittings have corroded or worn
Even when the fabric looks fine, check the hardware: eyelets, harness, ring and swivel. Corroded eyelets tear out of the fabric under gust load; a seized swivel stops the sock tracking the wind, which defeats its entire purpose. Stainless steel fittings (as used on our Safeguard windsock) resist this far longer than plated alternatives, but nothing is maintenance-free, especially on coastal and industrial sites.
The test: the sock should swing freely through 360° by hand with no sticking points, and every eyelet should be secure in undamaged fabric.
How often should you check?
A quick visual check weekly and a hands-on inspection quarterly suits most industrial sites; aerodromes typically fold windsock checks into daily airfield inspections. Harsh environments (coastal, offshore, chemical) deserve double the frequency.
Replace the windsock, keep the pole
