Windsock Mounting Requirements

How a windsock is mounted is as important as the windsock itself. The wrong pole height, a poorly sited mast or a seized swivel can all render an otherwise compliant sock useless. Mounting requirements vary by application, but the underlying principle is consistent across all of them: the sock must fly in free, unobstructed air and be visible from where it needs to be read.

The swivel: the non-negotiable requirement

Every permanent windsock installation requires a swivel bearing that allows the sock to rotate freely through 360 degrees. A fixed mounting that does not rotate defeats the entire purpose of the indicator. The sock must be able to track wind shifts in any direction without restriction.

The swivel arm must also be long enough that the tail of the sock cannot wrap around the mast during a full rotation. Larger socks with wider mouths require longer swivel arms. Mismatched hardware ; a large sock on a short swivel arm ; is one of the most common installation errors and causes the sock to bind and give false readings in certain wind directions.

Swivels should be inspected quarterly and lubricated per the manufacturer’s specification. On coastal and industrial sites, salt and contamination accelerate bearing wear. A stiff or seized swivel should be replaced, not forced.

Pole height requirements

The minimum height for a windsock mast is the height needed to fly the sock in free-stream air above surrounding obstructions. As a practical starting point:

Licensed aerodromes: 6 metres or more, positioned to comply with ICAO Annex 14 obstacle limitation requirements and clear of the runway strip. Frangible mast construction is required for airside installations.

COMAH industrial sites: 4 to 5 metres minimum, positioned to clear surrounding buildings, tanks, bunds and plant. The sock must be visible from all primary muster points.

Ports and marine construction: 4 to 6 metres, visible from crane cabs and vessel positions across the operational area.

Onshore helipads: 3 to 5 metres, positioned clear of the FATO and rooftop plant.

Smaller sites (farms, events, golf courses): 2 to 3 metres is typically sufficient where there are no significant surrounding structures.

Pole types

Hinged baseplate ground pole is the standard for permanent industrial and aviation installations. The hinged base allows the mast to be lowered for sock changes and inspection without climbing equipment, making it the safest option for regular maintenance access.

Wall-mounted bracket suits rooftop helipads, industrial buildings and sites with limited ground space. The fixing must be structurally adequate for the wind load at the installation height.

Ground sleeve allows the mast to be removed entirely, suited to seasonal or temporary installations.

Frangible mast is required for airside installations at licensed aerodromes under ICAO Annex 14 and CAA CAP 168. These are designed to break apart on aircraft contact rather than causing structural damage. They are striped red and white for obstacle marking and must meet specific break-load requirements to pass aerodrome licensing inspection.

Telescopic or temporary pole with a ground spike is appropriate for events, agricultural use and other temporary applications. Not suitable for any regulated or permanent installation.

Siting: the most overlooked requirement

A correctly specified sock on the correct pole height will still give inaccurate readings if it is sited in turbulent air. Common siting errors include mounting too close to a building, in the lee of a bund or tank, or at a height that leaves it in the wind shadow of surrounding structures.

The practical rule: mount the sock so it flies in clear air, above the height of surrounding obstructions, with unobstructed sightlines from the positions where the reading needs to be made.
