Illuminated Windsock Requirements
A windsock that cannot be seen at night provides no information at the moment it may be needed most. For any site where operations continue in darkness, illumination is not optional. The specific requirements depend on the type of site and the regulatory framework that applies to it.
Aviation: CAP 168 and ICAO Annex 14
For UK licensed aerodromes that conduct night operations, CAA CAP 168 requires wind direction indicators to remain visible in darkness. ICAO Annex 14, on which CAP 168 is based, specifies that the indicator must be illuminated, either internally or externally, so it can be read by pilots on approach and by ground staff throughout the hours of darkness.
In practice, this means every aerodrome that holds a night rating or conducts any operations outside of daylight hours must have an illuminated windsock. A sock that is unlit during night operations is a CAP 168 compliance failure.
The illumination must be positioned to make the sock visible from the runway threshold and from aircraft on approach without causing glare into the cockpit. External floodlighting from above is the most common arrangement; internally illuminated socks are also used, particularly where the mast position makes external lighting impractical.
Offshore helidecks: CAP 437
For offshore helidecks, CAA CAP 437 goes further than the basic illumination requirement. CAP 437 requires internally illuminated windsocks on helidecks used for night operations, with the illumination system certified to ATEX/IECEx standards appropriate to the hazardous zone classification of the platform.
Oil and gas platforms carry Zone 1 or Zone 2 electrical zone classifications under DSEAR and the ATEX Directive. Any electrical component installed in those zones must be certified for use in an explosive atmosphere. This applies to the windsock illumination system without exception.
Onshore industrial sites
For onshore industrial sites operating at night, including COMAH-regulated chemical plants, EfW facilities, refineries and water treatment works, illumination is required wherever the windsock forms part of the emergency response plan and operations continue after dark. Most large industrial sites operate 24 hours, which means the windsock must be visible at any hour.
Where the proposed illumination location falls within an ATEX-classified electrical zone on an onshore site, the same ATEX/IECEx certification requirement applies as for offshore helidecks. The zone classification must be established before specifying the illumination system.
Internal versus external illumination
External illumination uses a floodlight mounted above or alongside the mast to illuminate the sock from outside. Simpler to install and maintain, and the light source is accessible without lowering the mast. The risk is shadow effects on one side of the sock in certain wind directions.
Internal illumination uses a light source inside the cone of the sock itself, typically mounted on the swivel arm. It illuminates the sock evenly from within regardless of wind direction, which is the preferred arrangement for offshore helidecks and demanding aviation applications.
For ATEX-classified locations, both types of illumination must use certified components. The certification class must match the zone: Zone 1 requires a higher level of protection than Zone 2.
