Piggotts Flags & Branding and Parliament. At Piggotts Flags & Branding Limited we consider every order and every customer special: indeed we think each job we do as a privilege. However, every once in a while a piece of work comes along that is out of the ordinary.

We were recently honoured to have been asked to hand sew several flags for the Houses of Parliament. All the flags required were to be hand sewn Union Jacks in various different sizes and for various locations.

Two of them however are required to be flown at Victoria Tower. For anyone who doesn’t know Victoria Tower, it is the square tower which is located at the south-west end of the Palace of Westminster in London. It is slightly taller than Elizabeth Tower, which you may know better as Big Ben.

The Tower itself is just shorter than 97 metres tall. As you can imagine, flying a flag from something that high and not having it lost does require a very specific type of flag, which isn’t just a standard size.

So where do you go when you need a special flag, in a special size, to be hand sewn? Yes you guessed it; they came to us at Piggotts Flags & Branding Limited!

The flags in question that are being made are Union Jacks. The size of the flags is a massive 7.32metres x 4.37metres which is 24feet x 14.4feet. It takes about a day to measure all the angles and cut out all the individual sections of a Union Jack of that size and then another day to sew them all together (the results you can see below).

And two were required!

A number of other sizes were requested in various sizes but these two for Victoria Tower were the biggest requested. Indeed these were some of the biggest flags that we have ever had the pleasure of producing!

Once the flags are completed they are fitted with anti-fray netting material. As you can imagine being flown almost 100 metres in the air makes for a lot of wind and the anti-fray netting ensures that the flags fly prouder and longer on top of one of the most recognised landmarks in London.
